What causes skin issues?

Skin problems are common in pets and can be caused by hormonal disorders, allergies, infections, or parasites such as fleas and mites. To prevent parasite related skin reactions, it’s important for your pet to take a monthly preventive. They provide broad spectrum protection against a range of external parasites that would otherwise be harmful to your furry friend’s overall health. You should inspect your pet’s skin regularly to check for any irregularity that could be a sign of any underlying health issues. The longer they are left untreated, the harder it is to address them and ensure your pet’s quality of life isn’t negatively impacted.

Should I try treating my pet’s skin issues at home first?

Home remedies often cause more harm than good, especially when many products have unregulated ingredients or things that can worsen the initial infection. If you notice any of the following, it’s important to promptly book an appointment so we can support you to address the issue:

  • Excessive scratching
  • Patches or scabs
  • Scaling
  • Redness or inflammation
  • Lumps
  • Bumps

How do you treat skin issues?

Our first step is to ensure we have an accurate diagnosis. Skin issues can be a symptom of an underlying health issue, which is why we need to address the root cause of your pet’s infection. Some skin conditions only need a physical exam before they’re diagnosed whereas others need more procedures like bloodwork, urinalysis, skin scraping or a biopsy to confirm. After their diagnosis, we’ll recommend specific treatments based on their needs. Some of these include oral antibiotics for infections, topical creams, medicated shampoos or removing environmental triggers from their space.
