Microchipping

Discover the importance of microchipping and ensure the safety and security of your pet.

We highly recommend microchipping as the best form of permanent pet identification. It’s hard to think about your pet getting lost but it’s important to take the necessary steps, like microchipping, to ensure they’ll make their way back home to you. The implantation is a minimally invasive procedure for your pet and is over almost as quickly as it started.

Is it safe for my pet to have a microchip inside them?

Microchips cause no harm to your pet after they’ve been inserted. They’re no bigger than a rice grain and are created with pet-friendly technology. Our veterinary team will use a needle to insert it in the loose skin behind your furry friend’s neck. It’s a painless process, which only takes a few moments. Most pet parents decide to have it done during other procedures, like elective surgeries.

How does it work if my pet is recovered?

Each chip is connected to an ID number, which is recovered with a low-frequency radio wave scanner. It looks similar to the handheld scanners used in grocery stores. After the ID number is retrieved, the veterinary team or shelter who has your pet can contact the chip’s manufacturer. They’re able to share the pet recovery database it is connected to, which can provide your contact information. Next, you’ll be contacted so you can be reunited with your pet. It’s important to ensure your contact information is updated in the database so you’ll be contacted using the right information.

What other steps can I take to protect my pet?

Identification tags are recommended in addition to the microchip to provide added protection. The only way to ensure tags are effective is by ensuring your contact information is visible and up-to-date. If you’re interested in having your pet microchipped, please contact us at 705-522-4555.
