When does my pet qualify for senior status?

Senior status varies depending on your pet’s breed and size. We will help you determine when your pet has entered their golden years. For example, 1 human year isn’t quite the same as 7 for dogs. Smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger dogs, and cats generally live longer than dogs. Your pet’s overall health can also impact when you start seeing more grey hairs in their coat. After they reach senior status, we recommend more frequent veterinary visits. What does your senior wellness program include?

Before your pet reaches senior status, we recommend diagnostic testing to help us establish a baseline of their health. We use these diagnostics as a measure of their overall health, which makes it easier for us to notice any changes. In most cases, we suggest this checkup after your pet’s 7th or 8th birthday. During their bi-annual senior wellness checks, we’ll determine steps we can take to help improve their quality of life including pain management, establishing a well rounded diet, creating an exercise plan and suggesting environmental modifications like installing mobility supports around your home. We also treat the symptoms of cognitive dysfunction syndrome, which is similar to Alzheimer’s in humans.

What kind of diseases can my pet develop as they age?

Regular diagnostic screening is especially important throughout your pet’s senior years because the risk of some diseases increase with age. Many pets don’t show signs of serious illness until it’s advanced. Our wellness program includes diagnostic testing for the following:

  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Hormone disorders
  • Kidney and liver issues
